Dr. Bouton received an ScB from Brown University in Providence, RI in 1976 and moved to Charlottesville with her husband who was about to begin UVA Law School. After working for 5 years, she entered the PhD Program in microbiology at the UVA School of Medicine.

In 1985, Bouton performed postdoctoral research with Tom Parsons, PhD and in 1991, she joined the UVA faculty as a member of the Department of Microbiology. She is currently a professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology, and also serves as the associate dean for graduate and medical scientist training in the School of Medicine.

Bouton has had a long-standing research program focused on breast cancer; serves as the PI of the NCI Cancer Training Grant; serves as course director for a number of cancer-related graduate level courses; has mentored 20 PhD students; and has served on more than 90 thesis advisory committees. Dr. Bouton has also sat on grant review panels for the NIH (including as chair for Tumor Cell Biology), NCI, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program.  

In her new role as associate director for education for UVA Cancer Center, she will exploit current strategies and develop new platforms for education and interchange between students, fellows, faculty and clinical and support staff.
