Roger Anderson, PhD

Associate Director, Population Sciences, Co-Leader for Cancer Control and Population Health Research

Email: UVA Cancer Center's Associate Director of Population Sciences and Co-Leader for Cancer Control and Population Health Research, Roger Anderson, PHD
Phone: 434.982.2480

As the inaugural associate director for population sciences and program co-leader for cancer control and population health research, Roger Anderson, PhD brings together, organizes and cultivates population sciences research focused on cancer prevention, treatment and outcomes so UVA Cancer Center excels in its mission to improve the health and well-being of the population it serves.

Specifically, Anderson works to develop sound knowledge and evidence on how to effectively lower the cancer burden among diverse populations; reduce cancer health disparities locally and nationally; and facilitate, test and implement the translation of new knowledge and technology to practice in our communities.

Anderson has a 25-year background in academic research. He joined UVA in September of 2014 in his research leadership position and as professor of public health sciences.

His clinical research interests include cancer health disparities, evaluating benefits of health care and treatments on patient outcomes, access to health care in rural Appalachia and healthcare system and policy effects on population health.

Anderson recently moved to Charlottesville, VA from Hershey, PA where he lived for 7 years, after having moved north from Winston-Salem, NC. He is glad to be living near mountains and valleys in central Virginia. Outside of work, he enjoys stone masonry and recently helped build a stone and brick ‘squirrel-tail bake oven,’ the type that Amish settlers used, for an historic property in Schaeffersville, PA. The ovens are modeled after ancient Roman designs.
