Bone Cancer

Bone cancer is a rare disease in which cancer cells grow in the bone tissue. Cancer occurs when cells in the body, in this case bone cells divide without control or order. Cancer may form in the bone or spread to the bone from another site in the body. When cancer starts in bone tissue, it is called primary bone cancer. When cancer cells travel to the bone from another site in the body, it is called secondary or metastatic cancer. An exciting new approach to secondary bone cancer is being developed by Paul Read, MD and his team of radiation oncologists and physicists.

Diagnosing Bone Cancer

Diagnosing the various forms of bone cancer requires advanced imaging procedures. UVA Cancer Center is equipped with the latest in radiology technology, including CT, MRI, PET and other equipment that is used to for bone scans. Bone cancers treated at UVA include osteosarcomachondrosarcomaEwing's Sarcoma, fibrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytomagiant cell tumor, chordoma and more. When Cancer Spreads to the Bone

Reinventing Advanced Care Delivery

Paul Read, MD, and his radiation oncology team are designing a new approach to care delivery for patients with advanced cancer that has spread to the bone. The new process will reduce weeks of radiation into a single visit and will keep patients out of the hospital and home with their loved ones as much as possible. The goal is to improve quality of care and quality of life for patients. Their new model received a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Innovation grant of more than $2.5 million.

About the New Model

  • The three foundations of Paul Read’s groundbreaking approach to care for patients whose cancer has spread to bone:

    1. Streamlined radiation oncology: A bold new way of administering cancer treatments that will condense an entire treatment course to a single, half-hour visit.
    2. MyCourse: A comprehensive monitoring system that will keep close tabs on patients’ physical and mental well-being, allowing physicians to intervene quickly and nimbly whenever needed.
    3. CARE Track: An innovative new approach to palliative care designed to keep patients out of the hospital and in the comfort of their own home.
