The Importance of Early Detection

  • Breast cancer is the second leading type of cancer in women so it is important to perform self exams, get yearly mammograms usually starting at age 40 (depending on risk factors and family history) and communicate with your doctor if you notice unusual changes in one or both breasts. Early detection is critical because it expands the treatment options that are available to you upon diagnosis and increases the chances of recovery. The UVA Breast Care Program has a robust breast cancer screening program, offering digital and 3D mammography, breast tomosynthesis and more.

Advanced Clinical Care for Breast Cancer Patients

Our Approach to Treatment

Determined by the stage of cancer, multiple treatments types are utilized that could include surgery, medicine therapies, radiation, and image-guided Intraoperative Radiotherapy (IORT). With early-stage breast cancer, a lumpectomy is performed followed by radiation. If a patient qualifies, IORT will be done which involves removing the lump while using targeted radiation at the same time. For advanced cancers of the breast, more invasive surgical procedures are performed, including mastectomy.
