Breast Cancer Treatments at UVA
Determined by the stage of cancer, multiple treatments types are utilized that could include surgery, medicine therapies, radiation, and image-guided Intraoperative Radiotherapy (IORT). With early-stage breast cancer, a lumpectomy is performed followed by radiation. If a patient qualifies, Precision Breast IORT will be done which involves removing the lump while using targeted radiation at the same time. For advanced cancers of the breast, more invasive surgical procedures are performed, including mastectomy.
