Pancreatic Surgery at UVA

Pancreatic Cancer

Once you have pancreatic cancer, surgery is the only cure. But it's only an option for 10-15 percent of patients. Surgery for pancreatic cancer at UVA includes:

  • The Whipple procedure (or pancreaticoduodenectomy), the most common operation for pancreatic cancer
  • Distal pancreatectomy (removal of the body and tail of the pancreas) and splenectomy (removal of the spleen)
  • Total pancreatectomy, or removal of the pancreas (only used in a very small number of patients
  • Laproscopic second open surgery

Pancreatic Cancer Surgery Clinic

Pancreatic Cysts

If you have a benign cyst that is not causing health issues, your doctor may recommend regular follow-up and continue to monitor the situation. For painful or potentially cancer-causing cysts, your doctor may decide that surgery to remove the cyst is the best option. Learn about the Pancreatic Cyst Clinic at UVA.

Meet Rob

Rob's pancreatic cancer treatment involved a team of caregivers.

Rob didn't have one doctor for his pancreatic surgery and treatment, he had an army. He also had a customized vaccine created just for him. Watch a video or read a story.
