Detecting Cancer Earlier with 3D
The key feature of the Mobile Mammography Coach is the digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) or 3D mammography equipment that is on board. 3D mammography is similar to regular mammograms but adds more detail, making it easier to identify breast cancer at earlier stages. During the procedure, multiple low-dose X-ray images are obtained, processed and reformatted to be viewed as one millimeter slices through the breast. How Mobile Mammography Works
Appointments are required for all mammograms aboard the mobile coach. If the schedule (PDF) shows that the coach is going to be in your area, contact the site administrator for your location to make an appointment or call 434.243.4704.
Inside the Van
Inside the coach there is a reception area where you will fill out the necessary paperwork. When paperwork is complete, you will be directed to the dressing room next to the mammography suite for the procedure. After your mammogram, you will return to the dressing room and exit through the reception area. Literature about breast health, breast cancer risks, importance of healthy life style, exercise and nutrition are available inside the coach.
About Breast Screening
Mobile mammography services are for screening purposes only. Women who have a history of breast disease may be at higher risk and should schedule regular screenings through the UVA Breast Care Program at UVA Cancer Center. To be screened, you must have an active relationship with your healthcare provider.
A letter with the mammography screening results will be mailed to your healthcare provider within two weeks. If a follow up or more extensive breast imaging is needed, this will be indicated in the letter and you will be contacted promptly by UVA Breast Care staff to schedule an appointment.
For UVA Primary Care Patients
If you are a patient of UVA Primary Care and are interested in mobile mammography, call your UVA primary care provider to see if the mobile coach is coming to your doctor's office.
