Managing Side Effects

Cancer Side Effects

Cancer itself causes pain and discomfort, many similar to the wide range of side effects of cancer treatment. Treatment side effects vary but can include anemia, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, constipation and diarrhea, change in taste, fever, hot flashes and night sweats, pain, nerve changes and more. Confusion and issues with memory can also occur, particularly with chemotherapy.

Radiation and other forms of cancer treatment have side effects as well. Please ask your doctor for advice on managing any physical issues that you experience as a result of these treatments.

Cancer also causes emotional side effects. UVA Cancer Center provides support services for patients and their families and the National Cancer Institute is a good resource for guidance as well.

Managing Emotional Side Effects

The National Cancer Institute's Coping with Cancer web portal is a valuable resource for patients and their caregivers. The website offers an abundance of resources online about the emotional aspects of cancer and suggestions on how to cope.
