Radiation Therapy

Radiation Therapy

Our compassionate radiologists and staff use the latest technology and have the largest array of advanced treatment options in Virginia, which allows us to customize treatment for each patient's needs.

We have experience treating patients with:

  • Trilogy and TruBeam Linear Accelerators
  • HD Helical TomoTherapy
  • High Dose Rate Brachytherapy with its own CT scanner planning system
  • Perfexion GammaKnife

TomoHD™

We’re the first cancer center in the nation to offer the latest version of the TomoTherapy system, which delivers precisely targeted radiation treatments that preserve more healthy tissue than previous versions.

Brachytherapy

Radioactive “seeds” are planted inside the tumor to treat prostate, cervical, breast and head and neck cancers. This allows for a higher-than-normal dose of radiation, reduces the risk of damaging healthy tissue and increases the chance of destroying the tumor.

  • We offer a CT on Rails Brachytherapy Suite, where patients with gynecologic and prostate cancers can get treatment in a single, more comfortable location instead of needing to be moved to multiple locations. This helps reduce the chances the brachytherapy “seeds” will shift, which improves treatment accuracy.

Intraoperative Radiation Therapy

We're one of the first centers in the U.S. to offer this combined treatment option, where high-dose intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is combined with CT on Rails Brachytherapy.

  • The combination leads to a more accurate treatment and may be an option for patients with early-stage breast cancer.
  • The treatment option is expected to both reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence and improve cosmetic outcomes.

Varian TrueBeam™ Linear Accelerator

The first of its kind in Virginia, this streamlined system for planning and monitoring treatments delivers a pre-determined amount of radiation in a safe and effective manner.

  • The TrueBeam rotates around the patient to deliver a prescribed radiation dose from nearly any angle.
  • Treatment is guided by 3-D images for higher accuracy.
  • Patients can get their treatment plan at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and then receive treatment at the ECCCC or at Moser Radiation Oncology, where there is a "twinned" linear accelerator.

Varian Trilogy®

Delivers the full range of radiation therapies, including image-guided radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, 3-D conformal radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, fractionated stereotactic radiation therapy and intensity-modulated radiosurgery.

  • Includes RapidArc™, state-of-the-art software that allows targeted treatment to be delivered in two minutes or less.

Respiratory Gating

Delivers precise treatment to areas in the body, such as the lungs, where tumors can move as a patient breathes.

Other Radiation Treatment Options

Alternative options may include:

  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT)
  • Total body irradiation (TBI)

How Radiation Treatment Works

Half of all cancer patients will receive radiation therapy at some point during their illness. The goal of radiation therapy is to cure the disease or shrink the tumor without damaging surrounding tissue.

Your radiation therapy includes:

  • Real-time imaging to make sure we know the exact location of the tumor and any changes in its size or location
  • Monitoring of your progress and adjustment of your treatment plan to ensure the radiation is hitting its target

Your Radiation Team

Your radiation team is led by radiation oncologists who are experts in the types of cancers they treat. In fact, our Department of Radiation Oncology publishes more than 20 scientific articles every year on radiation advancements aimed at improving cancer care.

Your radiation oncologist will:

  • Discuss your care with other cancer specialists
  • Oversee your treatment and follow you after treatment

Your radiation team also includes:

  • Dosimetrists who work with the radiation oncologists to design your personalized treatment plan based on state-of-the-art imaging studies.
  • Radiation physicists who make sure all the equipment is working properly and perform special measurements to ensure your customized plan is safe.
  • Radiation therapists who are highly trained to operate our advanced radiation equipment and provide your daily prescribed treatment.
  • Radiation oncology nurses who have years of training and will work with you and your doctors to see  how you’re handling your treatment and help manage possible side effects. They also provide support and counseling to you and your family.
